Prime Minister Imran Khan on Wednesday dubbed the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) local government elections as the start of a modern, devolved local government system that exists in ‘successful democracies’.
The premier took to his official Twitter handle to state that “amidst the noise over KP LG [elections] no one realises these elections are start of modern, devolved LG system as exists in successful democracies.”
“Directly elected Tehsil nazims will improve governance and create future leaders,” he added.
PM Imran further said that it was the first time in Pakistan’s 74-year-long history wherein the country had “an empowered LG system”.
Meanwhile, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Mehmood Khan held meeting with Prime Minister Imran Khan 0n Wednesday and presented a report, citing reasons behind the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s weak performance in the first phase of KP local government elections.
According to sources, rising inflation and local leaders’ differences with one another contributed to PTI’s defeat in the elections. Also in the report, KP Governor Shah Farman, Speaker Asad Qaiser, other MPAs and MNAs were blamed for the party’s loss.
In Peshawar’s Mathra tehsil, fingers were pointed at Noor Alam and MPA Arbab Waseem while differences between Governor Shah Farman and MNA Nasir Musa Zai led to party’s defeat in Badaber tehsil.
Sources told that the report also pointed out names of the party’s parliamentarians and senior leaders who did not extend their support to the candidates.
Meanwhile, the prime minister has issued guidelines to CM Mehmood Khan to devise a strategy for the second phase of local elections.
Local elections were held in 17 districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on December 19. In the second phase, local elections will be held in the remaining 18 districts on January 16.
