Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf parliamentary leader in the Sindh Assembly Khurram Sher Zaman while proposing a separate police force for Karachi on the pattern of metropolitan policing model. He said that due to the increasing incidents of crimes, especially street crimes in Karachi, Karachi police is ineffective. Traditional style is not being dealt with and hence the need for a new force or policing model for the city which is different from Sindh.

The PTI Parliamentary Leader said that the Karachi Police Force under an Independent Police Commission will be accountable to Mayor Karachi. In addition, the police force will be recruited on the basis of merit among residents of Karachi.

The city of Karachi deserves a police force that is characterized by integrity, discipline and professionalism rather than one plagued by incompetence, corruption and political influence.

Khurram Sher Zaman pointed out that, currently, Karachi’s policing model is reactive rather than preventive. Which is the standard of most police forces around the world?

Police can gain public approval when they prevent crime, enforce the law impartially, hire officers who represent and understand the community, and use force only as a last resort.

He said police officers are members of the society they serve and therefore should be impartial while enforcing the law irrespective of wealth, social status, race and religious and political affiliations.

The ultimate goal of policing is to protect and serve the public, not to act as a personal military wing or thug on behalf of the ruling party in power.
