Pakistan is moving forward with plans to sell state-owned assets that are experiencing financial losses, in a desperate effort to stabilise its fragile finances, and latest reports claimed that Karachi Airport had been secretly sold.
The unverified posts online suggested that Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport had been secretly sold for $1.8 billion. The posts sparked different reactions on social media.
However, these claims were swiftly refuted by the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA).
As the rumours gained traction, Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority spokesperson trashed the rumors, calling them baseless. Aviation officials also issued an official clarification on social media to address the situation, affirming that Jinnah International Airport remains under its management.
PCAA also urged social media users to rely on credible sources for accurate information and cautioned against spreading unverified claims that could create unnecessary confusion.
The government of Pakistan earlier deferred plans to outsource Karachi, and other airports. The delay comes to accommodate international and local bidders’ requests for more time to complete due diligence.
