In order to eradicate the elements of electricity theft and to recover the dues from the defaulters the detection and recovery teams of IESCO in Islamabad, Rawalpindi City, Rawalpindi Cantt, Attock, Jhlum and Chakwal Circles, with the support of the police and the district administration, are carrying out a series of operations under the supervision of Chief Executive IESCO Dr. Muhammad Amjad Khan. During the ongoing campaign started from September against electricity thieves, more than 0.1 million electricity meters were checked and penalties exceeding 21 million were imposed on 2695 consumers based on direct supply, slowness and tampered meters. Additionally police lodged FIRs and arrested 299 electricity thieves. During the campaign for the recovery of dues from electricity defaulters, IESCO’s recovery teams collected dues exceeding 353.3 million from 22,624 defaulters across the region, and multiple meters and transformers were removed due to non-payment.
Both campaigns, under the directives of the Government of Pakistan and the Ministry of Energy, are being welcomed in public constituencies, and there is a demand for the continued operation of these campaigns because the burden of electricity theft and defaulters should not fall on the general public. The effectiveness of IESCO’s detection and recovery teams was appreciated by the Chief Executive of IESCO, who stated that they are implementing a zero-tolerance policy against electricity theft and non-payment of bills.”
