Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, the country’s foreign minister and governor along with other members died after President convoy helicopter crashed in near Azerbaijan border region amid foggy weather conditions.
Despite the standoff with US, Israel and other nations, Iran’s President was admired by politicians and religious leaders from parts of the world. Tributes started pouring as news of Raisi’s death spread and the world started to mourn.
Several leaders including Shehbaz Sharif, Narendra Modi, Xi Jinping, and Putin were quick to pay their respects and send their messages of condolences to Tehran.
Pakistan announces day of mourning
The government of Pakistan announced day of mourning to honor the late Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian, and other senior officials who died in a helicopter crash.
A statement issued by Pakistani prime minister said Pakistan will observe a day of mourning, and the flag will be flown at half-mast to pay respects to President Raisi and his companions, and to show solidarity with our brotherly nation, Iran.
On behalf of the government and people of Pakistan, I extend our deepest condolences and sympathies to the Iranian nation for this terrible loss,” the prime minister said, offering prayers for the departed souls.
China
Chinese President Xi Jinping termed Emrahim Raisi’s death as “tragic,” stating that “the Chinese people have lost a good friend,” according to a spokesperson from China’s foreign ministry.
Turkiye
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan referred to Raisi as a “valuable colleague and brother,” and shared on social media, “As a colleague who witnessed his efforts for the peace of the Iranian people and our region, I remember Mr. Raisi with respect and gratitude.”
EU
European Council President Charles Michel conveyed the European Union’s “sincere condolences,” adding, “Our thoughts go to the families.”
India
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed shock at the news, stating that “India stands with Iran in this time of sorrow.”
Iraq
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani expressed “great sadness and sorrow.”
UAE
UAE President bin Zayed Al Nahyan declared that the UAE “stands in solidarity with Iran during this difficult time.”
Malaysia
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated that Raisi “exemplified a deep commitment to the welfare of his people and the dignity of his nation, representing a proud and rich civilization rooted in Islamic principles.”
Venezuela
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said he was “deeply saddened” by Raisi’s death, calling him “an excellent human being, defender of his people’s sovereignty, and an unconditional friend of our country.”
