The horror in Gaza has once again reached an unbearable peak, with over 100 Palestinians killed in an Israeli strike on a school sheltering displaced people. This attack, which targeted civilians during the sanctity of dawn prayers, is not just another tragic incident in the decades-long conflict, it is a stark reminder of impunity with which Israel continues its barbaric campaign against the Palestinian people.
Despite repeated calls by the ICJ and the UN for a cessation of hostilities and adherence to international humanitarian law, Israel persists in its brutal actions without fear of consequence. This latest strike on a place of refuge for civilians highlights the utter disregard for human life that characterises ongoing military campaign in Gaza. It is a campaign that has left thousands dead, including women, children and elderly, and has reduced entire neighbourhoods to rubble. Washington’s unwavering backing, manifested in continuous supply of weapons and political cover, has only emboldened Israel to pursue its military objectives without restraint.
The moral responsibility for the bloodshed in Gaza cannot be divorced from actions of those who enable and support the aggressor. The time has come for the US to reassess its position in the Middle East. If the US truly aspires to be a leader in promoting peace and human rights, it must stop siding with the oppressor and start advocating for the oppressed. The international community must hold Israel accountable for its grave actions.
