BERLIN – In a thrilling final of the European Football Championships, Euro 2024, Spain beat England with a 2-1 win in the final held in Berlin on Monday.
Spain’s path to the championship was flawless, winning all six of their matches leading up to the final. This victory marks Spain’s record fourth European Championship title.
The decisive moment came late in the game when Mikel Oyarzabal scored, securing the win for Spain. The first half saw a cautious start from both teams, but the game picked up pace immediately after the break. Luis de la Fuente’s team took the lead thanks to a brilliant assist from teenager Lamine Yamal to Nico Williams, who skillfully placed the ball past England’s goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
England, known for their resilience in the tournament, managed to equalize in the 73rd minute with substitute Cole Palmer finding the net, much to the excitement of the fans at the Olympic Stadium.
As the match neared its end, Oyarzabal connected with a low cross from Marc Cucurella, securing the decisive goal just four minutes before the final whistle, much to the delight of Spanish supporters.
Reflecting on his crucial contribution, Oyarzabal said, “I did my job and what I had to and was lucky enough to score the goal for the win. Being among the 26 names selected is special, but helping the team like I did is the most important part.”
