IN any democratic society, the foundation of a robust political system is built upon free, fair and transparent elections. The elections serve as a mechanism through which the will of the people is accurately reflected in the formation of government. Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) holds the pivotal responsibility of conducting elections that are beyond reproach. To ensure that the democratic process remains unblemished, the ECP has rightfully emphasized the importance of providing a level playing field to all contesting candidates and political parties during the general election. This principle not only safeguards the credibility of the electoral process but also upholds the citizens’ trust in their chosen representatives.

Credibility is the bedrock upon which the democratic process stands. When citizens believe that their votes genuinely shape the course of the nation, they are more likely to participate actively and responsibly in the electoral process. A compromised election, marred by favouritism or undue advantages, erodes public trust and may lead to disillusionment. Consequently, the legitimacy of the elected government can be called into question. To prevent such a scenario, the ECP’s insistence on the caretakers’ government to ensure a level playing field is a welcoming statement but it is important to understand that the caretakers only serve as the facilitator. Their duty is to provide the necessary logistical, administrative and security support to the ECP, enabling it to function independently and effectively. The primary responsibility rests with the ECP to ensure that the elections are not only free and fair but also transparent. A transparent election process ensures that all stages of the electoral cycle, from voter registration to the announcement of results, are conducted openly and with accountability. The ECP’s commitment to transparency is key to preventing fraudulent activities and manipulation from tainting the electoral process. The ECP must relentlessly work to guarantee the sanctity of elections, reinforcing citizens’ trust in their democratic choices. The Commission needs to come clear on the delimitation of constituencies, ensuring the process is completed on a fast track basis so that the elections do not face much delay. Upholding the constitution is a must to ensure stability and social cohesion.
