ISLAMABAD – Justice Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi has submitted his resignation as Supreme Court judge as he faced misconduct allegations in the Supreme Judicial Council.
In letter to President Dr Arif Alvi, Justice Mazahir Naqvi called it honour to serve as Judge first of the Lahore High Court, Lahore and then as the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
He however maintained that amid the current circumstances, it is no longer possible for him to continue to serve as Judge of the Supreme Court. I, therefore. effective today resign as a Judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, the letter cited.
The apex court judge was facing multiple complaints on charges of corruption and imperfect asset details was being heard in Supreme Judicial Council.
The senior judge of Pakistani judiciary stepped down as top court declined to halt proceedings conducted by the Supreme Judicial Council against Justice Naqvi with the ruling that without hearing the case on merits, stay cannot be granted.
Supreme Judicial Council, the forum that inquire into conduct of judges, directed Justice Naqvi to submit a reply within against the complaints lodged against him.
Last year, SJC issued show cause notice to Justice Naqvi amid complaints alleging bench manipulation and financial misconduct.
In November 2023, Justice Naqvi contested Supreme Judicial Council proceedings and he challenged show-cause notice issued to him by the council.
He was elevated in March 2020 as Lahore High Court (LHC) judge, and was later moved to apex court.
