ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Army will be deployed for security in accordance with the Constitution in the general elections 2024 that are set to be held in February 2024 after much delay.
The electoral watchdog in a letter to interior ministry asked for the deployment of armed forces to ensure the law and order situation during the next general elections.
It pointed current deteriorating security situation, expressing grave concern for the authorities concerned and to ensure a smooth process, it asked for the deployment of Armed forces at polling stations and for patrolling.
ECP said it is taking all possible steps to organise polls, and expects the same commitment from the executive authorities and law enforcement agencies.
Furthermore, the top election regulatory authority also sought a report from the police to determine the availability of security personnel for the elections.
Earlier, Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja said that the much-awaited schedule for general elections would be issued 54 days ahead of the February 8 polls, which is expected to fall in the third week of December.
He mentioned that the updated constituency lists had been released, and all other election prerequisites were being completed smoothly. He said the ECP has been proactively handling election-related responsibilities ahead of schedule.
The timely announcement of the election schedule, appointment of returning officers, and district returning Officers will be ensured at an appropriate time, he added.
The ECP notified the final list of delimitation of constituencies of the national and four provincial assemblies and had also rejected the reports of a possible delay in elections.
As Pakistan heads towards general elections, several leaders said it is difficult to carry out political activities in parts of regions especially in KP and Balochistan due to the security situation.
