“Education is a fundamental human right that applies especially to both girls and women and is critical to combat discrimination in all it forms. Education is the only means for true gender equality. The main task facing administrators has been the need to emphasize the critical role which education must play in a developing society whose stated aim/ objective is to attain 100% gender disparity free state”. This was observed by Director General NCHD Hassan Baig while addressing to the Senior Management Meeting held regarding Gender discrimination and Rural Women, here today,
DG NCHD Hassan Baig highlighted that, Pakistan government has taken a number of measurements to intensify efforts in eradicating gender based discrimination. A number of laws have been enacted by the government to safeguard the rights of women, in line with the normative instruments, and to give full effect to the provisions contained in the 1960 UNESCO Convention against Discrimination in the Education and the 1979 Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women Act 2010, he added.
Speaking on the matter he said, women in Pakistan make up 48.76% of the total population according to the 2017 census of Pakistan. The status of women in Pakistan differ considerably across classes, regions and the rural/urban divide due to the uneven socio-economic development and the impact of tribal and feudal social formations on lives of women in Pakistan.
Gender Concerns International reports depicts that the overall women’s rights in Pakistan has improved with increasing number of literate women, he informed. Elaborating the statistics he lamented, there are high numbers of out-of-school children, and significant gender disparities in education, across the entire country, but some areas are much worse than others.
