PESHAWAR – South Waziristan check post attack caused heavy losses as sixteen Pakistani soldiers embraced martyrdom in a terrorist assault.

In a statement, Pak Army’s media wing said sixteen Pakistani soldiers were martyred in a terrorist attack on a security forces check post in the Makeen area of South Waziristan during the night of December 20-21.

The attack was repelled by security forces after a fierce exchange of gunfire, which resulted in the deaths of eight militants. The fallen soldiers were identified as Sepoy Ihsanul Haq (22), Sepoy Faiz Muhammad (22), Lance Naik Sher Muhammad (26), Lance Naik Mosawir Shaheen (29), Lance Naik Liaqat Ali (30), Lance Naik Muhammad Ishaq (31), Lance Naik Hamid Ali, Havaldar Umer Hayat (40), Havaldar Tahir Mehmood (41), Havaldar Muhammad Hayat (37), Havaldar Ayub Khan (38), Sepoy Tayyab Ali (23), Sepoy Mehboob Rehman (26), Sepoy Kalim Ullah (26), Sepoy Junaid (26), and Sepoy Junaid Sawati (25).

In response to the attack, a sanitization operation was launched in the region to ensure the area’s security. Authorities have vowed to bring the attackers to justice.

Army’s media wing emphasized that armed forces are determined to eliminate the menace of terrorism, and the sacrifices of the soldiers further strengthen this resolve.

The recent terror incident shows ongoing resurgence of militant violence in Pakistan’s western border regions, especially since Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan in 2021.

Security experts lamented Afghan Taliban’s failure for failing to prevent militants from launching attacks from across the border.
