DAMASCUS – Fears of wider Middle East conflict cast as an Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria came under attack by Israeli air raids, resulting in several casualties.
International media reports claimed that Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior commander of the Revolutionary Guards, was among those killed in Israeli strikes.
Viral clips online show smoke clouds and debris emanating from the tall structure, located near the Iranian embassy along a highway in the Mezzeh area.
The attack is said to be a startling apparent escalation of conflict in the Middle East. Iranian media said several Iranian diplomats had been killed in the attack. Syrian and Iranian foreign ministers were both spotted at the scene.
Israel has not issued any comment on the incident, as its forces has ramped up airstrikes in Syria against Lebanon’s Hezbollah and Iran’s Guards, both of which support the government of President Bashar al-Assad.
This is a developing story…
