As the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa continued to record over thirty Covid-19 deaths daily for the last more than one week, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has imposed a complete lockdown in Mardan where the positivity rate of Corona cases has alarmingly crossed 40 per cent.
The fresh victims of the epidemic include yet another senior doctor. In the meanwhile Army was called in the provincial metropolis to help ensure implementation of SOPs.
The Pakistan Army’s troops patrolled Peshawar roads along with police and district officials on Sunday to ensure strict enforcement of corona SOPs.
The KP government spokesperson Kamran Bangash announced that a seven-day complete lockdown will be imposed in Mardan from Monday (today).
Bangash, however, declared that pharmacies and shops of essential commodities will remain open.
Bangash appealed to citizens to strictly follow the standard operating procedures.
It may be recalled that Mardan had recorded the first death of Corona virus in Pakistan in March 2020.
According to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Covid-19 daily update, 31 new deaths were recorded during the last 24 hours taking the tally of those succumbing to the deadly epidemic to 3134.
More than 950 new cases were reported on Sunday bringing the number of positive cases in the province to 114077.
A senior doctor Dr. Mohammad Ali, Assistant professor Gandahara Medical University Peshawar also lost battle to the Corona virus on Sunday.
Agencies add: Meanwhile, another 118 people died of coronavirus in Pakistan during the last 24 hours, whereas 5,611 more people were tested positive, showed the statistics released by the National Command and Operation Centre on Sunday morning.
As per the latest NCOC data, after the addition of 118 more deaths the toll in Pakistan has now jumped to 17,117 while the number of positive cases has surged to 795,627 after addding5,611 new ones.
Capt (retd) Dr Syed Mumtaz Hussain Shah, child specialist at a local hospital in Kurram district, was suffering from novel coronavirus for the last few days, died yesterday.
His lungs were severely damaged and was being treated at a private hospital in Islamabad. His funeral prayer was held at village Zairan and was laid to rest at a local graveyard.
So far, 7,964 individuals have lost their lives to the pandemic in Punjab, 4,593 in Sindh, 3,103 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 660 in Islamabad, 461 in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, 232 in Balochistan and 104 in Gilgit Baltistan.
Pakistan has purchased over 30 million doses of Covid vaccine from China that will soon arrive in the country to help in a drive to vaccinate its over 220 million population.
According to sources privy to the development, the country has purchased 30.5 million Covid vaccine doses from three Chinese companies.
“Pakistan will purchase 20 million jabs of single-dose Covid vaccine from CanSino besides also purchasing 5.5 million doses from Sinopharm and 5 million from Sinovac,” they said.
The National Command and Operation Centre said that in the wake of surge in Covid-19 cases in the country, the decision to implement lockdown would be taken after deliberate discussion amongst all stakeholders.
The Forum at its meeting with Minister for Planning and Development Asad Umar in the chair deliberated upon proposed lock downs in high disease prevalence cities.
It was decided that to extend two days interprovincial transport ban on Saturdays and Sundays till 17th of next month.
The forum was told that the few proposed restrictions would include closure of markets and malls, less essential services and complete closure of educational institutions.
