Hamdard University’s attached Rufayda College of Nursing hosted a Christmas celebration this year with the theme “Unity in Diversity” aimed at fostering unity across Pakistan’s diverse society. The event took place at the Madinat-ul-Hikmah Main Campus , bringing together students, faculty, and Christian families to commemorate the birth of Lord Jesus Christ. The Deputy Speaker of the Sindh Assembly, Anthony Navid, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, while His Grace Cardinal Joseph Coutts, who has been awarded the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz for his efforts in promoting interfaith harmony, delivered the keynote address. Other notable attendees included Hamdard University’s Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Syed Shabib-ul-Hasan, Deans Prof. Dr. Asadullah Larak and Prof. Dr. Raza-ur-Rehman, and Bridg Dr. Roliaz ul Haq, CEO of HUH. The celebration was beautifully decorated with colorful lights, balloons, and a twinkling Christmas tree.

The atmosphere was further uplifted by carol singers performing Christmas songs, creating a joyful ambiance. Deputy Speaker Anthony Navid emphasized the importance of “Unity in Diversity” and referenced Quaid-e-Azam’s 11th August 1947 speech on building an inclusive society. He reminded the audience that this vision had been incorporated into Pakistan’s 1973 Constitution and was now in the implementation phase. Cardinal Joseph Coutts, reflecting on the theme, highlighted the need for healing and unity across all segments of society. He spoke of his discussions with Shaheed Hakim Said on promoting unity and noted the need for global peace, referring to conflicts in Gaza, Ukraine, and Africa.

“The Lord Jesus was declared the Prince of Peace,” he said. Rev. Shafqat Gill, founder of the Gospel Society of Pakistan, echoed the essence of Christianity as rooted in love, forgiveness, and service, which he believed were crucial to resolving the world’s conflicts. Professor Sarfaraz Masih reflected on how Pakistan could reclaim its multicultural and multi-religious foundation, as envisioned by its founders.
