ISLAMABAD – Justice Qazi Faez Isa took oath on September 17, 2023 as the 29th Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), replacing his predecessor Umar Ata Bandial.

He practised law for more than 27 years before being appointed to the High Courts of Pakistan, the Federal Shariat Court and the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

Justice Qazi Faez Isa’s tenure as CJP is quite brief as he is set to retire from the post on October 25, 2024.

The federal government has authority to grant extension to the top judge of the country if needed. However, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar has told local media that CJP Isa was not interested in extension as the chief justice of Pakistan.

He said the CJP had informed him about his intention after a meeting of the judicial commission, adding that Attorney General for Pakistan was also presented at that time.

The law minister said the chief justice told him that rumours had been circulating about extension in his tenure.

The minister said he informed him that there was no such thing happening. At which, the chief justice of Pakistan appreciated Tarar for the clarification.
