Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) candidate Jamshed Iqbal Cheema for by-election to NA-133 Lahore on Wednesday challenged the rejection of his and his wife’s nomination papers by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in the appellate tribunal.

In his plea, Jamshed Cheema has stated that his nomination papers were rejected by the returning officer (RO) as the proposer is not a resident of NA-133.

Proposer Bilal Hussain belongs to the same UC from where he has filed the nomination papers, Cheema stated in his plea submitted with the appellate tribunal.

PTI candidate has pleaded with the tribunal to turn down the RO’s decision and allow him to contest the polls. The tribunal will hear the case on November 9.

Earlier, PTI Senator Ijaz Chaudhry had expressed his hope that decision would be ruled out in the party’s favour.

“I’m 50 percent sure that the tribunal will rule in Cheema’s favour as the mistake is minor,” he was quoted as saying.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is set to hold the by-election in the NA-133 constituency on December 05.

Earlier, the nomination papers of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) candidates – Jamshed Iqbal Cheema and Musarrat Iqbal Cheema, in NA-133 Lahore were rejected by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) during a scrutiny process.

The PML-N had raised objections on the nomination papers of the PTI leaders, highlighting that their proposers and seconders were not from the constituency.

The returning officer reviewed the arguments from both sides for an hour today and later decided to reject the nomination papers.

Meanwhile, the charged workers of the proscribed Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) snatched 31 guns, 4000 tear gas shells, wireless sets and 220 anti-riot gear from police during their recent long march.

According to a report aired by a private TV channel on Wednesday, the TLP workers snatched the weapons, ammunition and security equipment due to the poor strategy of the police authorities.

According to the report, the long march participants severely damaged at least 48 police vehicles. The police sources said the TLP protesters snatched 16 police rifles and 15 tear gas guns.

The report said that the poor strategy of police officers to stop a banned religious party’s long march from Lahore to Wazirabad exposed the ability of their deal with the security issues.

Anyhow, the report confirmed that during the long march six policemen were martyred and 520 injured.

The report said that the police authorities had decided to hold negotiations with the bigwigs of the banned TLP to get back the snatched official weapons, ammunition and security equipment.

The report further stated that the police authorities had also issued directives to the policemen for verifying their weapons, ammunition and other official belongings.
