LAHORE – Governor Punjab Baligh-ur-Rehman on Friday accepted the resignation of Aitchison College Principal Michael Thomson while the board of governors approved the appointment of Amina Kamran as the interim principal.
Amina was picked for role during a meeting of the Board of Governors of Aitchison College, approval was given to the policy regarding fee waivers with important conditions.
Notably, she becomes the first woman to be elected as an acting principal of the prestigious Aitchison College. She has been serving the educational institution since 2006.
Furthermore, Amina Kamran was the first woman to become the headmistress of senior school in 2016 and leading head of all three schools (junior prep and senior) in 2021. After getting the role temporarily, Amina is running for becoming principal on permanent basis.
The Board of Governors strongly opposed the 100% fee waiver and waiving fees for all children. Junior and prep students were granted a 50% fee waiver while Hafiz-e-Quran students were granted a 50% fee waiver. The policy of fee waivers for senior school students was unanimously rejected.
Punjab Governor Baligh-ur-Rehman, as the president of the Board of Governors, while approving the policy of Aitchison College, said that they are ready for consultations on the differences.
Governor Baligh and Aitchison College Principal Michael A. Thomson had resolved their differences, and the governor has now accepted the principal’s resignation.
Most members of Aitchison College’s board said it would have been better to consider committee reports before any decision.
“Michael A. Thomson had greatly improved Aitchison College; we must acknowledge his services,” said the board members as per the sources.
It may be mentioned here that a few days ago, Aitchison College Principal Michael A. Thomson resigned from his position on March 25 due to differences with the Punjab Governor.
In his resignation letter, he stated that detrimental changes were made in policies for the sake of a few individuals. There is no room for nepotism and politics in schools. Due to the biased actions of the Punjab Governor House, the governance system has been disrupted.
