THERE is anger amongst the Baloch people over Islamabad Police’s action against the participants of Turbat Long March who had converged on the capital to protest against enforced disappearances. A complete shutter-down strike was observed in Khuzdar, Naal and Wadh town while rallies were staged in Quetta and other parts of Balochistan on Friday. The road link between Sindh and Punjab remained cut off for several hours as protesters staged sit-ins and held rallies, blocking Quetta-Karachi and Barkhan-Dera Ghazi Khan Highways.

The right to peaceful protest is an essential aspect of any democratic society. People, regardless of their geographical location, ethnic background or cultural identity, have the inherent right to voice their concerns and grievances. The actions taken by the capital police, involving tear gas, water cannons and batons against the Baloch protesters, reflect a complete disregard for this fundamental democratic principle. The people of Balochistan are as much Pakistanis as those from any other region. However, the recent events risk exacerbating the sense of deprivation felt by the Baloch people. Instead of fostering unity and understanding, the use of force only exacerbates the feelings of alienation. President Dr. Arif Alvi and Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar expressing concern over the police action is a crucial acknowledgment of the gravity of the situation. It is essential that their concern translates into concrete actions to address the legitimate grievances of the Baloch people. Enforced disappearances have been a longstanding concern and the families of the missing persons have a right to know the whereabouts of their loved ones. Even if an individual is suspected of a crime, due process must be followed and they should be presented before the courts for a fair trial. The courts are the proper authority to determine guilt or innocence, ensuring justice prevails. Healing the wounds of the people of Balochistan should be our priority. It is a well-known fact that India has been involved in funding terrorism in Balochistan and it will also try to benefit from the current situation. Therefore, it becomes crucial to prioritize internal harmony and address the concerns of the people to prevent external actors from taking advantage of the situation. We must sit with the Baloch community and address their genuine concerns.
