Long term plan launched to improve irrigation system in AJK

The Azad Jammu and Kashmir Prime Minister Raja Muhammad Frooq Haider Khan has said that the government has started a long term and comprehensive plan to improve the irrigation system at estimated cost of over 2.2 billion rupees. Addressing after the briefing given by Azad Kashmir irrigation department here on Thursday, he said the completion of this project will not only bring a revolutionary change in the agricultural sector but would also help control the unemployment.
Farooq Haider said the government is taking concrete steps to improve the irrigation system in Azad Kashmir to make the state self-sufficient in food.
He urged the people to come forward and utilize their potential and energies for the development of agriculture sector and supplement government efforts to increase the agriculture in the state The AJK Prime Minister was informed that the project includes the construction of water tanks, tube wells and water pumps to boost agriculture production in the state.
Under this five year project 2850 acre of land will be brought under cultivation and training to the farmers will be given to improve their skill. Fruit saplings would also be planted over 1000 acre of land. Speaking on the occasion the AJK Senior Minister Ch.Tariq Farooq said the National Programme for improvement of Water Resources has also been launched in Azad Kashmir in collaboration with the Federal government. He said the project will not only generate employment but would also help improve the living standard of the people.—INP
