MUZAFFARABAD – The 19th anniversary of the devastating October 8, 2005 earthquake is being commemorated across Pakistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) with solemnity and determination today.

This day is also being observed as a national day of awareness about disaster preparedness and safety measures.

The earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.6, struck on the morning of October 8, 2005, causing widespread destruction in areas such as Azad Kashmir, Muzaffarabad, Islamabad, and Balakot. Over 80,000 people lost their lives, while more than 100,000 were injured. Entire villages, infrastructure, and essential services like schools and hospitals were destroyed, leaving thousands displaced and the region grappling with the aftermath to this day.

In AJK, the day began with special prayers at Fajr in mosques for the souls of those who lost their lives. It has been declared a public holiday throughout the region.

A central ceremony is scheduled to take place in Muzaffarabad, honoring the efforts of the Pakistani government, international organizations, and friendly nations that played a pivotal role in the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the earthquake-affected areas.

Various events, including seminars, walks, and symposiums, are planned to spread awareness about preventive measures to minimize the impact of future natural disasters. Participants will include people from different walks of life such as social and political activists, lawyers, journalists, and business representatives.
