The two-day 16th National Undergraduate Medical Research (UMR) Conference 2023 started at Peshawar Medical College on Wednesday morning. Renowned Scholar, Prof. Dr. Mohammad Iqbal Khan, VC, Tameer-e-millet Shifa University inaugurated the seminar. Dean PMC, Dr. Hafeez ur Rahman also accompanied the chief guest. Faculty members and students from PMC and other institutions attended the inaugural session.

He lamented that unfortunately researchers in the Muslim world were focusing on therapeutic research and ignoring preventive Health.
He cited that in 372 hadiths of the Holly prophet had stressed prevention. He informed that during last year, 2.5 million research publications along with 43 million citations had appeared globally. He went on to say that only Israel had produced more than one lakh publications that were cited by one million researchers. Gesturing towards the absence of the trend of research in the Islamic world, the scholar informed that Pakistan produced only 798 research publications during l2022. Dr. Iqbal asked the researchers to establish a proper relationship with science to utilize it for the betterment of humanity.
He stressed the need for proper attention to public health to solve our problems. The guest underlined the need for collaboration among research institutions to strengthen their research activities and get better results. Dr. Haferzurrahman, Dean of PMC while referring to the research endeavors of the undergraduate lauded their enthusiasm in arranging the useful conference. “ Youth are our pride and we trust them and in return, they give us amazing results”, the Dean said.
Dr. Hala Rajab, Director of UMR, highlighting the aims and objectives of the conference disclosed that it was arranged to facilitate researchers to share their experiences and develop linkages. She informed that young researchers of the UMR had produced 1573 research papers up till now. Similarly, prof. Dr. Mohammed Irfan spoke on the role, responsibility, and need for a mentor in research.
