Directorate of Electronic Media and Publication (DEMP), in collaboration with the Maritime Training Institute (MTI) and the Nautical Institute of Pakistan, hosted a seminar “Navigating the Future: Safety First” on Thursday. The event marked the celebration of World Maritime Day, an initiative by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).
The seminar underscored the 2024 theme, “Navigating the Future: Safety First,” chosen by the IMO to draw global attention to maritime development and safety. Since its establishment in 1974, the IMO has been pivotal in creating binding agreements for maritime safety, reflecting its ongoing commitment to a safer maritime environment.
Sarah Mooney, Deputy High Commissioner of the British High Commission, praised the event, highlighting Karachi’s potential as a maritime hub. She noted that Pakistan’s blue economy, which encompasses a coastline of over 1,000 km, is critical to the nation’s growth and has the potential to generate significant revenue. Mooney also celebrated Pakistan’s ratification of the Hong Kong Convention, emphasizing its importance for environmental protection and acknowledging the recent visit of Commodore Anderson, who recognized Pakistan’s contributions to maritime safety.
Kevin Shakesheff, President of the Institute for Chartered Shipbrokers (UK), addressed the seminar on the global growth of goods transportation and the necessity for advanced and robust vessels. He stressed the future shift towards hybrid ships and fewer crew members, urging the maritime community to embrace technological advancements to remain relevant and sustainable. IrumTanveerOdho, DG (PR) Press Information Department (PID), represented the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MOIB) and emphasized the importance of the seminar’s theme. She highlighted how safety, sustainability, and innovation are crucial in maritime operations and discussed the impact of climate change on maritime environments.
Tanveer underscored Pakistan’s proactive measures, including blue economy initiatives and policies aimed at climate change mitigation, and presented a documentary titled “Guardians of Our Coastline,” showcasing the vital role of mangroves in environmental protection. The seminar concluded with remarks from Syed Ahmad Mahmoodi, CEO of “M” International Group, who commended the maritime community’s commitment to safety and sustainability. He celebrated Pakistan’s rich maritime history and the collective efforts of stakeholders to advance a safer and more sustainable maritime future.
