SPEAKING at a ceremony in Lahore on Friday, Prime Minister Imran Khan said that war has been waged against different mafias to ensure supremacy of rule of law as it serves as a defining moment to transform the country into a corruption-free and independent society.
There is no doubt that the present government has taken head on the cartels in different sectors.
Prior to this, these elements backed by political leaders used to be considered very powerful and untouchables, much to the worries of the people.
But it really goes to the credit of the government of taking the first step towards bringing them under the ambit of law.
The action taken against the land grabbers in Lahore and other major cities is a clear manifestation of it.
Thus far both public and private properties worth billions of rupees have alone been recovered in Lahore.
The action against the sugar cartel clearly indicates that it is going on in the most transparent and discriminate manner as those within the government circles are also being investigated.
This leaves no room for the leaders of opposition parties to accuse the government of political victimization. These actions indeed will have a far reaching impact.
One fully agrees with the assertion of Prime Minister Imran Khan that changing the system is a tedious task and it takes time to accomplish that task in the face of status quo forces resisting all such efforts.
However, if there is a will, there is also a way, and people have pinned great expectations with Khan to fulfil the promise of change.
Judicial and police reforms have become need of the hour to ensure that the people get speedy justice.
Whilst the government no longer faces any threat or challenge from the divided opposition, it must now also focus on providing relief to the people and accelerating work on the development projects.
It is only through execution of projects that economic activity will generate and also give confidence to the investors to make investment in different sectors.
