In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, the Voice of Victims (VoV), a Srinagar-based non governmental organisations (NGO), has urged India to implement the recommendations of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
The VoV Executive Director, Abdul Qadeer Dar in a statement issued in Srinagar emphasized the urgent need to address the past and ongoing human rights violations.
Hailing the report, he said that though the report was an eye opener for international community, but India had never respected the basic human rights in the besieged territory.
He said, thousands of people and political leaders and activists have been languishing in jails without any trial, adding that judiciary was too apathetic towards political prisoners.
The Executive Director deplored that even the human rights commission of the territory was abolished and the Kashmiri people had no other institution to listen to their woes.
He said, it is very strange that despite repeated reports of human rights violations, India had not taken any concrete step to address the numerous concerns raised in an earlier UN report.
The Executive Director expressed deep concern and said that the draconian Armed Forces Special Powers Act 1990 (AFSPA) remained a key obstacle to accountability, adding no forces’ personnel involved in human rights violations in the territory have been prosecuted in a civilian court.
He appealed to the world community to take cognizance of the worst kind of human rights violations in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.—KMS
