By vetoing the resolution at the UN Security Council, calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, the United States has once again thrown its weight behind the oppressor rather than the oppressed one. This is not a surprising at all as the US has been doing so for a long time.
The persistent use of the veto power in such circumstances places the US peace credentials under scrutiny and challenges the perception of its commitment to fostering stability and justice on the international stage. Its consistent support has only encouraged and emboldened Israel to continue with its killing spree in occupied Palestinian territories. The conflict in Gaza, which has persisted for two months, has led to a staggering loss of life. According to reports, 17,487 Palestinians, predominantly women and children, have been killed, painting a grim picture of the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region. Adding to the controversy, the US Administration has requested Congress to approve the sale of 45,000 shells for Israel’s Merkava tanks, specifically for use in its offensive operations in Gaza. The proposed sale, valued at over $500 million, has raised eyebrows. It is indeed an inhumane decision given the ongoing violence and loss of civilian lives. The international community has not been silent on the matter. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, in a rare move, formally warned the Security Council of the global threat posed by the prolonged conflict. Furthermore, the statement from the Saudi Foreign Minister emphasized the need for an immediate end to the fighting in Gaza, characterizing the establishment of a credible roadmap leading to a Palestinian state as essential. The call for an international peace conference to address the root causes of the conflict echoes sentiments shared by many who believe that a lasting political solution is crucial. Such a solution would not only end the immediate hostilities but also pave the way for the establishment of a Palestinian state, addressing the longstanding grievances of the Palestinian people. The feasibility of this outcome hinges significantly on the sincerity of the United States, which, instead of aligning with a particular side, could play a pivotal role as an impartial and honest mediator. By adopting a neutral stance and leveraging its diplomatic influence, Washington has the opportunity to foster an environment conducive to constructive negotiations, ultimately steering the region towards a just and durable resolution.
