Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s remarks at a meeting in Lahore on Saturday regarding the importance of SMEs highlights a pivotal step for the economic future. By recognizing SMEs as the backbone of the economy, the government acknowledges their critical role in fostering growth and innovation. This focus aligns with the country’s broader strategy for export-led growth, which will require empowering these businesses to compete globally through enhanced support and integration into international supply chains.

Achieving this will require strong collaboration between federal and provincial governments to create a conducive regulatory environment that supports business growth and export expansion.

Access to capital has long been a challenge for SMEs, hindering their ability to grow and innovate. The Prime Minister’s push for the State Bank of Pakistan to simplify loan application processes is a necessary and welcome intervention. Easier access to financing will empower new entrepreneurs and allow existing businesses to expand, ultimately fostering a more dynamic and resilient SME sector. Another commendable step is the plan to hire international experts to guide the development of the SME sector. Studying successful global models and adapting them to our unique context is an important strategy for long-term growth.

Nations such as Germany, South Korea and Malaysia have demonstrated how a strong SME sector can drive economic development and we can learn from their experiences. These experts can help identify gaps in existing policies, suggest improvements and offer insights into best practices, ultimately creating a more favourable environment for SMEs to thrive. Building a robust digital infrastructure and investing in affordable energy solutions will significantly boost SME productivity. Additionally, skill development through tailored training programs will equip entrepreneurs to innovate and compete globally.
