The Supreme Court on Friday gave police four weeks to arrest the absconding accused in a triple murder case as the applicant – Umme Rubab Chandio – in Islamabad said she was facing serious threats from the landlords of Sindh. As a three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed heard the matter, Sindh IGP Mushtaq Mehar informed the apex court that they had provided substantial security to Umme Rubab. Police had arrested one of the accused Zulfiqar Chandio and would be able to capture Murtaza Chandio soon, the provincial chief assured the court. With reference to the applicant’s statement that her life is in danger, the chief justice told her that they would summon the IGP again if something happened to her. At this point, Umme Rubab said Zulfiqar – a fugitive – was arrested after a deal with landlords and added that the sitting MPA was a facilitator of the accused. Ordering the Hyderabad DIG to arrest Murtaza within four weeks, the three-member bench adjourned the hearing for a month. Later, Mehar avoided answering the questions but told the reporters outside the court building that they would issue a press release on the subject. On the other hand, Umme Rubab, talking to media persons, expressed her satisfaction over the arrest of Zulfiqar but noted that the police’s failure to lodge an FIR against the facilitators reflected their partiality.—INP
