TALKING to the media men, Mehmood Khan Achakzai of PKMAP has once again proposed the formation of a national government. The fact of the matter is that we are already functioning under an undeclared national government. The PML-N, PPP, MQM are part of the government in the centre whilst all the major political parties also have their governments in the provinces. This political reality raises the question: why is there a persistent instability when so many parties are already part of the governing structure?
The crux of the issue lies in the unwillingness of some political elements to acknowledge and accept each other’s mandates. Instead of fostering an environment conducive to cooperation, political parties often engage in activities that undermine their opponents and destabilize the government. This perpetual cycle of distrust and rivalry has kept Pakistan on the brink, inhibiting meaningful progress in addressing the pressing issues of security and economic development. It is important for all political entities to rise above their individual agendas and prioritize the welfare of the nation. They must come together to discuss and agree on fundamental issues—most notably, security and economic stability. Moreover, a charter that emphasizes non-conspiracy against the sitting government is essential. Political actors must pledge to refrain from undermining each other through clandestine manoeuvres aimed at toppling the government. Such an agreement would be a significant step toward restoring faith in our political institutions and ensuring that governance remains focused on the public good rather than partisan gains. The stability of Pakistan hinges on the ability of its political leaders to collaborate and affirm their allegiance to the democratic process. The time for dialogue and consensus is now, and all political parties must step forward to embrace this opportunity for the sake of the nation.
