“Sonic the Hedgehog 3” continued to lead at the box office in the North America amid competition among the animated and family-oriented films, the international media reported on Monday.
The video game adaptation earned $112 million at the domestic level after it earned an additional $12.6 million on Friday.
After a slower start, Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King made a notable recovery and briefly overtook Sonic the Hedgehog 3 to claim the top spot over Christmas. However, it slipped back to second place on Friday, adding $12 million to its total. The film is now targeting a domestic gross of over $100 million by the end of the weekend and hopes to maintain its momentum into the New Year.
Directed by Barry Jenkins and produced for $200 million, Mufasa needs continued success both domestically and abroad to meet Disney’s financial expectations for the year.
Meanwhile, the third Sonic film reached the $100 million mark in North America just eight days after its release. With a production budget of $122 million, the film is performing well and plans for a sequel are already in the works.
This marks a solid opening for Focus Features, especially considering the $50 million production budget. With positive reviews, Nosferatu is establishing itself as a standout release in the horror genre this season.
In third place is Focus Features’ Nosferatu, a remake of FW Murnau’s iconic silent vampire film directed by Robert Eggers. The film, which opened on Christmas Day, earned an additional $7 million on Friday and is expected to gross $39 million over the five-day holiday period.
