Smog continues to choke Punjab as Lahore’s AQI stays beyond hazardous level

LAHORE – Hazardous smog will continue to choke Lahore and most parts of Punjab on Tuesday night, Wednesday and Thursday.

Lahore and most parts of Punjab are experiencing harsh weather conditions due to the lack of any significant rains. On Tuesday at 7:15 pm, Lahore’s Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 621, the highest in any city on the globe as per the IQAir live rankings. AQI of 301 plus is considered hazardous.

As per the Punjab Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Lahore’s average AQI was recorded at 607. AQI at Town Hall was 666, Punjab University 596, and Shimla Hill 559.

As per the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), continental air prevails over most parts of Pakistan. A shallow westerly wave also prevails over the upper parts of the country.

Under these conditions, mainly dry weather is expected in Lahore and most districts of Punjab on Tuesday night, Wednesday and Thursday.

Smog will likely persist in Lahore, Kasur, Okara, Sialkot, Hafizabad, Toba Tek Singh, Jhang, Narowal, Attock, Jhelum, Chakwal, Mangala, Gujarat, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Sheikhupura, Sahiwal, Faisalabad, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Multan, Layyah, Bhakkar, Khanewal, Khanpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Dera Ghazi Khan and surrounding areas. Dense fog will likely prevail during morning/night hours.

Lahore’s minimum temperature will likely remain between 16-18°C on Wednesday and Thursday.

Meanwhile, smog/fog persisted in Lahore, Gujranwala, Multan, Faisalabad Kasur, Okara, Sialkot, Hafizabad, Narowal, Sargodha, Sheikhupura, Sahiwal, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Rahimyar Khan and Dera Ghazi Khan during the last 24 hours. Dense fog also prevailed during morning/night hours.

Murree remained the coldest place in Punjab where the mercury dropped to 06°C. Relative humidity in the evening was recorded at 52 per cent.

In Lahore, minimum temperature was recorded at 19°C. Relative humidity in the evening was recorded at 68 per cent.
