In a bid to promote accessibility and appreciation of cultural heritage, the Sindh Department of Antiquities and Archaeology has announced the abolition of all entry and parking fees at the historic Makli Cemetery, located in Khuda Bux Brohi, Thatta.

The decision, conveyed through an official memorandum from Director General Abdul Fattah Sheikh, comes after widespread public dissatisfaction with the previous fee structure, which many deemed prohibitive for both local visitors and foreign tourists.

Previously, the department had leased parking spaces for 200,000 rupees and charged an entry fee of 500,000 rupees annually. These fees have now been waived, with existing contracts annulled to facilitate free access to the necropolis, renowned globally as one of the largest in the world.

Makli Cemetery serves as the final resting place for numerous historical figures, including kings, warriors, saints, and other prominent personalities, spanning centuries of Sindh’s rich cultural heritage. The initiative aims to foster a more inclusive and welcoming environment for visitors, thereby enhancing their experience and encouraging greater tourism to the site.

By removing financial barriers, the Sindh Department of Antiquities and Archaeology hopes to make Makli Cemetery accessible to all, promoting a deeper understanding and appreciation of the region’s illustrious past. This move signifies a significant step towards preserving and celebrating Pakistan’s cultural legacy for generations to come.
