The Sialkot Deputy Commissioner (DC) Umer Sher Chattha on Wednesday has said that the initiative of a fully equipped tannery zone was a significant leap forward by the Sialkot Tannery Association (STA) in order to modernize the local leather industry in an environment friendly way. He said this while presiding over a workshop at the Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) on the topic “Climate Change: emerging issues, adaption challenges & recommendations for leather sector in Sialkot”, organized by STA and facilitated by United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). The DC added that the Sialkot based already industries proved to be the torch bearers of corporate social responsibility for the country by taking bold initiatives in infrastructure development and social service. He said that the project of STA in collaboration with UNIDO would be a landmark achievement of public-private partnership in Pakistan. He hoped that the project would significantly relieve local population of the contamination of water and many other environmental issues as well as introduced further progress of the local leather industry.
