Sindh High Court (SHC) has reserved its verdict on a petition challenging the recent 50% fee hike at the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST). The case was brought forth by students from the university’s Law Department, who argued that the increase violates established regulations. In their petition, the students contended that according to the law, universities are permitted to raise fees by only 10% annually.

However, they claimed that FUUAST had implemented a staggering 50% increase based on “verbal orders.” This unexpected hike has reportedly placed a significant financial burden on the students, leading to widespread concern within the university community.

The plea further highlighted that the fee structure for various departments had been altered, exacerbating the challenges faced by students already grappling with the costs of their education.

During the proceedings, the SHC heard arguments from both sides before reserving its judgment on the matter. This case follows a recent ruling by the Lahore High Court (LHC), which deemed the fee hikes imposed by private medical colleges during active study programs as illegal.

The LHC’s decision, delivered by Justice ShahidJameel, mandated the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) to ensure that fees collected from students remain consistent with those agreed upon at the time of enrollment in their respective programs.

As the SHC deliberates on the FUUAST case, students await a decision that could significantly impact their financial obligations and educational experience
