Shattering myths

THE recent wave of criticism directed at the Pakistan military, particularly by DAWN, over alleged military convictions has raised serious concerns about the portrayal of the most respectable institution. This rhetoric, amplified by political figures such as Imran Khan and his allies, not only undermines the integrity of the military but also poses a direct threat to the country’s unity and stability.

Dawn’s portrayal of military convictions as part of an alleged systemic abuse of power is not only misleading but also deeply problematic. The military’s internal justice system, which has been a topic of controversy, operates within strict legal parameters and is designed to uphold discipline and accountability within its ranks. It is important to note that military courts often deal with cases that cannot be effectively tried in civilian courts due to the sensitivity of the matters involved, such as national security and terrorism to paint these actions as an abuse of power is to disregard the grave nature of the threats that necessitate such measures.

Critics often overlook the military’s significant contributions to nation-building. From spearheading development projects in underprivileged areas to leading disaster relief operations during floods and earthquakes, the armed forces have consistently gone beyond their primary mandate to serve the people of Pakistan. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the military’s role in enforcing health protocols and distributing aid was pivotal in preventing a larger catastrophe. Such actions are a testament to the institution’s commitment to the welfare of the nation, a commitment that stands in stark contrast to the self-serving politics of individuals like Imran Khan.

DAWN’s unbalanced critique fails to account for the fact that the military remains one of the most respected institutions in Pakistan. This respect is not unearned; it is a result of decades of unwavering dedication to the country. Surveys and polls repeatedly show high levels of public trust in the armed forces, a trust that cannot be easily eroded by the rhetoric of a few detractors. Imran Khan’s attempts to vilify the military are unlikely to succeed in the face of this enduring public confidence.

It is also important to scrutinize the motivations behind DAWN’s and Imran Khan’s narratives. The media’s role in holding institutions accountable is undeniable, but it must also act responsibly to ensure that its criticism is fair and constructive. Sensationalist reporting and politically motivated attacks do a disservice to the public by distorting the truth and fuelling divisions. Imran Khan’s strategy of using media platforms to propagate his anti-military agenda is a calculated move to sway public opinion, but it is a strategy that ultimately weakens the nation.

In conclusion, the unfounded criticism of military convictions by DAWN, fuelled by Imran Khan’s anti-military rhetoric, is not only unwarranted but also dangerous. The Pakistan military’s role as a defender of national security and a unifying force cannot be overstated. Rather than vilifying this institution, it is time to recognize and appreciate its contributions to the nation. The road to a prosperous Pakistan lies not in division and blame but in collective effort and mutual respect among all pillars of the state.
