A meeting of Punjab Cabinet chaired by CM Maryam Nawaz on Tuesday approved a series of public welfare projects that have the potential to uplift the lives of countless families across the province. Among these initiatives, the Roshan Gharana Programme, the “Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar” housing project, and the introduction of electric buses in Lahore stand out as key measures aimed at improving the quality of life for the poor.

The Roshan Gharana Programme indeed is a visionary project for low-income households who find it difficult to pay high electricity costs. The impact of this program on household budgets will be significant, allowing families to allocate their limited resources to other essential needs. Similarly, the “Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar” project is to provide affordable housing to the underprivileged. With Rs1.5 million allocated to beneficiaries for the construction of a five-marla house in urban areas and a ten-marla house in rural areas, this initiative aims to make the dream of homeownership a reality for many. Owning a home is not just about shelter; it provides a sense of security, stability and dignity. The decision to introduce electric buses in Lahore is another forward-thinking move. For the poor, who rely heavily on public transportation, this initiative will not only provide a more reliable and affordable means of travel but also contribute to a healthier urban environment. While these projects are commendable, their timely completion is crucial. Delays in implementation could diminish their intended impact, leaving the poor to continue grappling with the challenges these initiatives aim to address. One initiative that has already begun to make a tangible difference is the “Clinic on Wheels” project. This mobile healthcare service is providing essential medical services, free medicines, ultrasound facilities and a range of treatments including vaccinations, antenatal care and paediatric services. Given its success, there is a pressing need to expand the scope of the “Clinic on Wheels” initiative to cover the entire province, with a particular focus on rural areas where healthcare facilities are scarce and many people struggle to access even basic medical services.
