In response to farmer complaints and reports of inadequate seed supply, the government of Punjab has initiated a comprehensive investigation into approximately 900 registered seed companies.
According to the spokesperson, the decision was announced by the Punjab Department of Agriculture, who emphasized the need to cancel the registration of seed companies lacking necessary infrastructure and supplying poor and substandard seeds in violation of regulations.
To address the issue of colored cotton seeds, the spokesperson called for stringent action against the unscrupulous elements exploiting farmers through the sale of uncertified and substandard cotton seeds. This, he asserted, would minimize damages to agricultural produce and curb the illicit practices of such seed mafias.
The spokesperson made it unequivocal that the government will not tolerate the sale of defective, substandard, or uncertified seeds. Authorities and stakeholders have been instructed to ensure the use of approved seeds.—APP
