Pakistani politicians mostly visit Britain and other EU nations to seek medical treatment, and the latest to jump on bandwagon is Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz who traveled to Switzerland by chartered plane for medical checkup for parathyroid disease.
The daughter of the former PM is not the first to visit foreign nation as many politicians have sought medical treatment outside Pakistan however her statement that ‘complete treatment for parathyroid is not available in Pakistan’ amassed quick reactions, including from medical professionals.
After Maryam Nawaz’s recent statement, social media users have not only expressed curiosity about the nature of the illness she is suffering from, but many are also questioning whether parathyroid disease treatment is really unavailable in Pakistan. Amid confusing rumours about her health, CM responded to rumors about her health.
Maryam clarified that she used to get her treatment in Pakistan, but parathyroid is a disease whose treatment is only available in two countries worldwide—Switzerland and the United States. The words from the head of the Punjab government went viral online, and doctors called it misleading for Maryam Nawaz to claim that parathyroid diseases are only treated in the USA and Switzerland.
Medical professionals said several countries, including Pakistan, offer effective treatment options. Hyperparathyroidism and hypoparathyroidism are managed through different ways including surgery and medications and both are readily available in Pakistan, where renowned facilities provide high-quality care.
Doctors said such misinformation from CM not only undermines capabilities of Pakistani medical community but also creates unnecessary despair among patients who are successfully treated locally, stressing medical facts should not be checked before any announcements.
