ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has blocked nearly one million websites spreading blasphemous and prohibited content.

PTA officials have stated that, so far, 101,083 blasphemous URLs and more than 844,000 immoral websites have been blocked.

The development comes after the Ministry of Religious Affairs sent a letter to PTA for blocking objectionable content available on the internet.

According to PTA, there are 20 million attempts daily to access immoral websites in Pakistan. “These immoral websites are blocked at the international gateway, but internet users try to access them using VPNs,” it said.

It said that the websites involved in spreading prohibited content are blocked on the basis of information provided by government departments and citizens.
