LUCKNOW – A tragic stampede in Hathras district in India’s Uttar Pradesh claimed lives of more than 100 people, local authorities said Tuesday, while dozens suffered serious injuries.

The panic was triggered at the end of Satsang prayer meeting in Mughal Garhi village. Rescue efforts are ongoing, with injured individuals transported to hospitals.

Hathras Satsang Stampede

The stampede occurred as attendees were leaving the event celebrating the Hindu deity Shiva, authorized by local police with security oversight left to event organizers.

Condolences poured in after the incident. Indian PM Narendra Modi offered condolences and assured government support for relief efforts. A high-level committee has been appointed to investigate the tragedy.

Opposotion parties said local administration was responsible for the safety and security of the people gathering at such a large scale.  Leaders also urged government to help the families of the deceased, while adding that he was hopeful that the injured would be provided good medical treatment.
