Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, in a televised speech, has forecasted a shift in global power from the ‘irrational’ West towards Asia and Russia, predicting that Pakistan would emerge as one of the world’s future major powers. While these remarks might seem surprising given our current economic and security challenges, as well as political turmoil, potential the country holds undoubtedly is immense and evident to keen observers. This recognition by Hungarian PM underscores the latent strengths and strategic importance of Pakistan.

Our geographical location is one of our most significant assets. China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a flagship project under China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), exemplifies our geo-strategic importance. This initiative not only promises economic benefits for Pakistan but also underscores its role as a critical player in regional geopolitics. Then youthful population is another factor that bodes well for its future potential. With over 60% of its population under the age of 30, Pakistan has a substantial demographic dividend. If harnessed effectively through education, skills development and job creation, this young workforce can drive economic growth and innovation, propelling the country towards becoming a major global power. Similarly, we are endowed with abundant natural resources, including coal, natural gas, minerals and fertile agricultural land. These resources, if managed efficiently, can significantly contribute to country’s economic development.

While the country is brimming with potential, right kind of policies can take it in the right direction. To achieve these targets, we must strive to realise the vision of founding father, Muhammad Ali Jinnah who once said, “It is one of the largest Muslim States in the world and it is destined to play its magnificent part year after year, as we go on, provided we serve Pakistan honestly, earnestly and selflessly.”

He also expressed his faith in the people of Pakistan, stating, “I have full faith in my people that they will rise to every occasion worthy of our past Islamic history, glory and traditions.” By idealising Jinnah’s vision, the nation can foster a renewed sense of purpose and direction. The journey to becoming a major power may be arduous yet country has all the ingredients to make it a reality.
