THE government has estimated that around 150,000 posts remain vacant in the Centre and its autonomous bodies, following the recent abolition of an equal number of positions as part of an IMF-driven rightsizing exercise.

The immediate priority should be to fill these vacant positions in order to restore functionality and effectiveness in public departments. Several departments are already experiencing severe staffing shortage, which is affecting their performance. The absence of qualified personnel in critical roles can severely hamper the government’s ability to serve the public, undermining the very purpose of rightsizing, which was supposed to streamline and improve operational efficiency. If left unaddressed, this staffing shortfall could have long-term consequences for the effectiveness of governance. The recruitment process must prioritize merit-based selection to ensure qualified individuals are hired, which will improve the overall efficiency and service delivery within government institutions. Filling these positions should not only be seen as a matter of administrative necessity but also as an opportunity to enhance the overall quality of public service. The introduction of the CP fund has made it possible to offer sustainable, permanent staffing solutions, which should be the focus going forward. Ad hoc hiring practices, while potentially offering temporary relief, will not provide the long-term stability needed to address the staffing crisis. Equally important is ensuring that hiring practices are equitable and accessible to individuals from various backgrounds. Another critical factor in the decision to fill these vacancies is the ongoing economic strain faced by the public, particularly in the light of inflation and its impact on household budgets. Employment within the public sector not only offers financial stability but also gives individuals a sense of security and purpose. By fulfilling these vacancies, the government can alleviate some of the economic hardships faced by the masses, providing a much-needed boost to public morale and goodwill toward the government.
