ISLAMABAD – Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif has been advised to not travel back to Pakistan without undergoing treatment in London.
The PML-N’s supreme leader, who was serving a seven-year prison term after his conviction corruption cases in December 2018, was allowed to go abroad for treatment in October 2019 by Lahore High Court. He went to London in November 2019 after Imran Khan’s government granted him rare permission.
Later in 2020, the Punjab government did not extend the bail granted by LHC to the former premier as he failed to satisfy the authorities why his bail should be extended.
Fayaz Shawl, a medical expert at Washington Adventist Healthcare in London, in its evaluation report said: “I found Mr. Sharif under a lot of stress, if he returns to Pakistan without undergoing a definitive treatment in London, the stress of living again in a solitary confinement as well as loss of a partner which can further compromise his cardiac status before definitive treatment can be rendered”.

“As previously mentioned, if he returns to solitary confinement, he may develop what we call ‘Takotsubo syndrome’ due to this stressful environment with devastating consequences,” read the report.
In march 2020, the Islamabad High Court had declared Nawaz Sharif a proclaimed offender in two graft cases — Avenfield properties and Al-Azizia— after he did not appear before the court despite issuing of summons. The PTI government had later cancelled his passport.
In March 2021, the Ministry of Interior turned down a request made by Nawaz Sharif, seeking the renewal of his passport.
Later in August, the United Kingdom’s home department had rejected former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s request for an extension in his visit visa.
The supremo of PML-N has filed the application, seeking an extension in his stay on medical grounds after his six-month visa expired.
Pakistan, UK agree to Sign Extradition Treaty
Last month, Pakistan and the United Kingdom agreed to finalise and sign at the earliest agreements for repatriation of convicted citizens and criminals.
The understanding was reached at a meeting between Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed and UK High Commissioner Christian Turner in Islamabad on January 18.
The two sides were also of the view that bilateral agreements would further strengthen cooperation between the two countries.
