RAWALPINDI – Director General Inter-Services Public Relations Major General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said perpetrators, and facilitators of May 9 attacks will have to face punishment as per the book.

Key Points from DG ISPR Conference

  • False narratives are often constructed in politics; and political anarchist group ought to offer an apology.
  • Dialogue is more appropriate for political parties, not the military.
  • Any evidence of the military’s involvement in the election should be presented to the ECP.
  • Only 31pc of the general population voted for a specific party. The vote may not necessarily indicate support for May 9.

In a press conference, Army spokesperson said those who were involved in May 9 riots need to be punished as per the Constitution to keep alive credibility and faith in the justice system.

Last year on this day, military installations were attacked following the arrest of former prime minister, leading to a crackdown against the party. During the conference, Major Gen emphasized that the events of May 9 were not just an issue for the Pak Army but for the entire nation.

He highlighted that if a country’s army is attacked, its martyrs’ symbols are insulted, and there is an attempt to create animosity between the army and the public, it is crucial for the perpetrators to be brought to justice to maintain trust in the country’s justice system.

He stressed the need for the perpetrators, including those giving orders, to be tried according to the Constitution and the law.

Gen Sharif concluded by saying that while some people may try to deceive others, the truth eventually comes to light.

Regarding the possibility of dialogue with any group involved in the riots, Maj Gen Chaudhry stated that there will be no talks with those who attack the army or propagate hate. He noted that the only way forward for such groups is to apologize sincerely and engage in constructive politics.
