PESHAWAR – Homosexuality attracts strict laws in Pakistan, and societal attitudes are largely conservative, and a man who attempted to form Pakistan’s first gay club in Abbottabad has been admitted to a mental health facility.

Last month, a man approached the deputy commissioner to open a club for LGBTQ community, calling it valuable resource for members. He called for community interaction without any sexual activity on the premises.

It has been learnt that local administration office confirmed receipt of the application and said it would be reviewed like any other proposal. The application caused outrage as its picture was leaked online, triggering backlash from residents and politicians.

Amid the outrage and threats, the man calling for establishing the first gay club has been transferred to the Sarhad Hospital for psychiatric disease in Peshawar.

The family and friends of the UK returned man are concerned for his safety as they are not allowed to visit the person.

Amid outrage, religious parties and local community members also warned of severe consequences if the club was approved.
