Was driving by the picturesque sea-link in Mumbai, where couples sit huddled together, all very much in love, when I saw a crowd and stopped my car, thinking there had been an accident.
It wasn’t. It was a lover’s tiff and a young man and women were screaming and shouting at one another.
I was about to get back to my car, when I stopped and imagined I heard the swish of wings and saw an angel flying up to the couple, and in my mind, I went closer to listen.
“Why do you shout in anger?” the angel whispered gently, “Why do you have to raise you voices at each other when you are upset? Why yell when the other person is just next to you? Isn’t it possible to speak to each other with a soft voice?” My imaginary angel turned to the girl, “Why did you just cry out?” “You tell me!” said the girl angrily.
The angel looked at her and smiled, and in its angelic eyes I saw understanding “When two people are angry with each other, their hearts distance themselves.
To bridge that distance, they must shout to be able to hear each other. The angrier they are, the stronger they will have to scream across that huge distance they’ve created!”
“But,” continued the angel, “look at the other couples around. All of them so much in love with each other: They don’t speak loudly, but talk softly, because their hearts are very close.
There’s hardly any distance between them!” I saw the couple look at each other then up at the angel who continued, “When a couple love each other even more, what happens? They do not speak, they only whisper and when they get even closer to each other in their love they don’t even need to whisper, they only need to look at each other, that’s all. That is how close two people are when they love each other!”
I saw the crowd nodding and edged closer. The angel looked at the young couple and said, “Children, when you argue do not let your hearts get distant, do not say words that separate you both, else there will come a day when those words will make the distance so great you will not find the path to return!”
The couple nodded and I saw them looking into each other’s eyes again, not needing words to express their love.
I heard the swish of wings as my imaginary angel disappeared after that, till I suddenly imagine I hear those wings again and those same words, “When you argue don’t let your hearts get distant from one another, or one day the distance will be so great you will not find the path to return to each other..!”
