In a bid to combat the persistent smog issue in Punjab, the local authorities on Tuesday proposed implementing a lockdown and setting up checkpoints across the province.
The sources privy to the development claimed that the primary factor contributing to the exacerbation of smog in the region is the abnormal traffic congestion in Lahore.
Surprisingly, emissions from brick kilns, often implicated in smog, account for only 7% of the problem.
As a result, the authorities have put forth a recommendation for a lockdown and the establishment of checkpoints as measures to address the smog crisis. Earlier it emerged that the smog tends to be most severe in Punjab on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. In response, the Punjab government was contemplating a comprehensive shutdown on Wednesdays. Such a move would involve the temporary closure of markets, educational institutions including schools and colleges, and even factories.
As part of this proposal, government offices would operate with a reduced workforce on Wednesdays. Additionally, on weekends, similar to measures taken during the COVID-19 lockdowns, checkpoints would be set up within the city .
