PESHAWAR – Violence between two groups claimed over one dozen lives while several others were injured and now efforts are underway to control law and order in the region.
The recent clashes come after a deadly attack earlier this week when a convoy of around 200 vehicles was ambushed with heavy gunfire in Bagana, and over 40 were killed. The convoy was traveling between Peshawar and Parachinar, areas that have long been plagued by sectarian violence and land disputes.
Local officials told media that several individuals would be airlifted to the provincial capital Peshawar for medical aid while efforts are underway to restore peace, with Kurram DC confirming that a high-level meeting was attended by KP IGP Akhtar Hayat, Chief Secretary and top government officials.
The recent events stemmed from a longstanding land dispute between the Alizai and Bagan tribes in the northwestern region.
Kurram, the region near the Pak-Afghan border – witnessed several clashes, with over 2,000 deaths between 2007 and 2011. The region is also a hotspot of TTP and Daesh Khorsan wing.
In early November, thousands of residents gathered in Parachinar to demand better security for Kurram.
