The Syndicate members of the University of Karachi (KU) have unanimously awarded the prestigious title of Professor Emeritus to two former vice-chancellors for their exceptional contributions to academia. The decision was made during a KU Syndicate meeting chaired by current Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr. Khalid Mahmood Iraqi, on Tuesday at the Vice Chancellor Secretariat. The award was granted to Professor Dr. Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui, who served as KU’s vice chancellor from January 6, 2004, to February 9, 2012, and Professor Dr. Muhammad Qasier, who held the position from February 10, 2012, to January 23, 2017. The Syndicate members praised both professors for their outstanding leadership and their lasting impact on the university.

During the meeting, the Syndicate also nominated Professor Dr. Solaha Rahman as a member of the Syndicate’s Discipline Committee for a two-year term. In a disciplinary move, the members decided to remove Quratul-Ain Rauf, a lecturer from the Department of Teacher Education, due to violations of university rules and regulations. The matter had been thoroughly reviewed before being presented to the Syndicate for a decision. Additionally, the creation of a general endowment fund and a pension endowment fund was discussed, with plans to send the matter for further groundwork to the relevant department.

A three-member committee was established to handle referred-back cases, with Professor Dr. Muhammad Qaiser appointed as the convener, joined by MPA Sadia Javed and Professor Dr. Nusrat Idrees as members. The Syndicate also approved the minutes of the previous meeting and the actions taken by the Vice Chancellor, including the selection board’s proceedings and appointments of new department chairpersons.
