The arrival of the second batch of J-10C fighter jets from China marks a proud and historic moment for Pakistan, showcasing its commitment to maintaining a robust defence capability. This acquisition not only strengthens the Pakistan Air Force’s (PAF) operational readiness but also underscores the enduring partnership between Pakistan and China.
The induction of these cutting-edge aircraft represents a significant step forward for the PAF, with a total fleet of 12 J-10C fighters now at its disposal. The J-10C, a single-engine light multirole fighter capable of operating in all weather conditions, has been recognized as one of the most powerful single-engine fighter aircraft globally. As far as Pakistan is concerned, it has consistently demonstrated a restrained-approach to military build-up but finds itself compelled to enhance its defence capabilities in the face of regional challenges.
The belligerence of its arch-rival India and the significant defence deals it has pursued, including the acquisition of Rafale jets from France, necessitated Pakistan’s response to maintain a strategic balance. The J-10C not only signifies a technological leap for the PAF but also serves as the first Infrared Search and Track (IRST)-equipped aircraft in its arsenal. This technology, which has long been employed by India through its MiG-29, Su-30, and Rafale jets, grants Pakistan access to a critical capability for modern aerial warfare. It is crucial to acknowledge that Pakistan has always prioritized defence preparedness without engaging in an unnecessary arms race. The PAF’s operational efficiency was vividly demonstrated in 2019 when Pakistani fighter jets successfully downed two Indian aircraft during a dogfight, showcasing the unmatched skills and professionalism of PAF pilots. As Pakistan continues to navigate the complex geopolitical landscape, it is imperative to strengthen its defence collaborations with strategic partners, especially China. The close ties between the two nations have been pivotal in enhancing Pakistan’s defence capabilities and the ongoing collaboration on the JF-17 Thunder fighter jet, a joint production of Pakistan and China, is a testament to this synergy.Moving forward, it is essential for us to focus on further modernizing the JF-17 Thunder, ensuring that it remains a versatile and potent platform. With the support of China, Pakistan can work towards achieving self-sufficiency in defence capabilities, reducing dependence on external sources.
